Chiefs seek first win against Vikings
Sep 23, 2007 - 12:16 PM Minnesota (1-1) at Kansas City (0-2) Sunday 1:00 pm EDTKANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Larry Johnson and the Kansas City Chiefs' offense have been virtual "no-shows" so far this season.
Things do not figure to get any easier this week as Johnson and the Chiefs host the Minnesota Vikings, who were the NFL's top team against the run last season, in their home opener.
This year, the Vikings are sixth against the run, allowing 76.0 yards per game.
The Chiefs do have two things going for them as they look to avoid their first 0-3 start since 2004 - dominance at home and dominance against the NFC.
Kansas City boasts the NFL's best home mark since 1990 at 102-34 (.750) and is an AFC-best 20-4 (.833) against the NFC since 1995.
But without Trent Green, the team's starting quarterback for the past six seasons, the Chiefs have managed only one touchdown in their first two games this season.
Damon Huard has struggled as Green's successor, passing for only 343 yards with three interceptions. He also has been sacked six times.
Johnson, the NFL's second-leading rusher last season, has gotten off to a disappointing start with just 98 yards in two games. He rushed for 1,789 yards a year ago.
The Vikings are coming off a 20-17 loss overtime to the Detroit Lions and also have quarterback concerns. Tarvaris Jackson tweaked his groin on the second play of overtime, putting his status for Sunday in question.
If Jackson is unable to play, the Vikings will go with Kelly Holcomb, who has not appeared in an NFL since starting eight of 10 games for the Buffalo Bills in 2005.
The Vikings fell last week despite forcing five turnovers and scoring a defensive touchdown. Two long punt returns led to 10 points for the Lions.
