Cowboys look to keep rolling against Jets
Nov 22, 2007 - 11:23 AM NY Jets (2-8) at Dallas (9-1) 4:15 pm ESTIRVING, Texas (Ticker) -- Terrell Owens credits his success this season to coach Wade Phillips and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett structuring the offense to suit his strengths.
Owens is enjoying a monster season for the Cowboys, who look to improve to 10-1 when they host the New York Jets on Thursday in their annual Thanksgiving Day game.
"I've definitely been able to elevate my game," Owens said. "I attribute my success to a head coach who came in and changed some things and an offensive coordinator who has utilized me to the best of my ability."
In last week's 28-23 victory over the Washington Redskins, Owens tied a franchise record with four touchdown receptions.
Owens leads the Cowboys with 58 catches for 1,028 yards and 12 TDs, including nine in the last five games.
Last week marked Owens' fourth consecutive 100-yard receiving game, the second-most consecutive in team history behind Michael Irvin's seven in 1995.
In addition, Owens (126) moved past Marvin Harrison for the third-most receiving touchdowns in NFL history, trailing only Jerry Rice (197) and Cris Carter (130).
Aside from the New England Patriots, the Cowboys boast the NFL's most potent offense, scoring at least 24 points in all 10 games.
Tony Romo's 27 touchdown passes already tie him with Roger Staubach (1979) for the third-highest single-season total in Cowboys' history.
In his first Thanksgiving start last season, Romo threw five touchdown passes in a 38-10 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
A year later, the Cowboys appear to be cruising toward their first NFC East Division title since 1998. They own a two-game lead over the New York Giants (7-3) with a tiebreaker edge.
A win on Thursday will give the Cowboys their first 10-1 start in franchise history. It would be a significant achievement since the team has won five Super Bowls.
Dallas will be facing a Jets team that surprised the Pittsburgh Steelers, 19-16, in overtime last week to snap a six-game losing streak.
Kellen Clemens earned his first win since replacing Chad Pennington as the New York's starting quarterback.
The best hope for the Jets (2-8) this week might be catching the Cowboys looking ahead to next week's showdown against the Green Bay Packers (9-1) that could decide home-field advantage in the NFC.
The Dallas Cowboys will be playing their 40th Thanksgiving game since 1966. They own a 24-14-1 record on the Thanksgiving.
