49ers place DB Ward (hamstring) on PUP, sign DL Thomas

Jul 28, 2017 - 6:54 PM The San Francisco 49ers placed defensive back Jimmie Ward on the physically unable to perform list Friday after he suffered a hamstring injury during Thursday's conditioning test.

The 49ers also announced the team signed defensive lineman Solomon Thomas, who was the third overall pick in this year's draft, to a four-year deal.

Ward's timeline for recovery is week-to-week, the team said.

The 49ers originally selected the 5-foot-11, 193-pound Ward in the first round (30th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 35 games (18 starts) over his three-year career, totaling 130 tackles, 20 passes defensed, two sacks and two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown).

In 2016, the 26-year-old Ward started a career-high 10 out of 11 games played and registered 53 tackles, one interception and a career-high 12 passes defensed. He also picked up his first career forced fumble and fumble recovery on special teams. He missed three games with a quadriceps injury in October and suffered a season-ending collarbone fracture Dec. 18 at Atlanta.

Ward will move to safety this season under first-year coach Kyle Shanahan and defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.

With Thomas' signing, the 49ers now have all 10 of the team's 2017 draft picks under contract.

The 6-3, 256-pound Thomas was the first of two first-round draft picks selected by the 49ers in this year's draft. In three seasons at Stanford, he appeared in 27 games and recorded 101 tackles, 11.5 sacks, 25.5 tackles for loss, four fumble recoveries and two touchdowns.

In 2016, the 21-year-old Thomas appeared in all 13 games and registered 62 tackles, 8.0 sacks, 15 tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries.
