49ers sign linemen Douzable, Gardner

Aug 14, 2017 - 7:16 PM The San Francisco 49ers bolstered both lines of scrimmage by signing Leger Douzable and Andrew Gardner to one-year contracts, the team announced Monday.

Veteran defensive lineman Douzable is joining his sixth NFL team, excluding stints on the practice squads of the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants.

The 31-year-old Douzable appeared in all 16 games, making five starts, for the Buffalo Bills last season while posting 43 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

The 6-foot-4, 284-pounder has recorded 159 tackles and 6.5 sacks in 107 games (14 starts) with the St. Louis Rams, Jacksonville Jaguars (2010-11), Tennessee Titans (2012), New York Jets (2013-15) and Bills.

Gardner, 31, started the 2016 regular-season finale for San Francisco at left guard. He has appeared in 28 games, making 12 starts, with four teams since 2009.

The 6-6, 308-pounder saw his most substantial action during the 1014 season with the Philadelphia Eagles, appearing in all 16 games and starting half of them.

The 49ers also waived injured safety Chanceller James. If James is not claimed, he will revert back to the team's injured reserve list.

James was signed as a free agent out of Boise State in May. He started 24 of 35 games in college, registering 171 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, 3.0 sacks, seven passes defensed and one fumble recovery.
