Garrard, defense lead Jaguars to rout of Titans

Nov 5, 2006 - 9:03 PM JACKSONVILLE, Florida (Ticker) -- Vince Young was left frustrated by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Young threw three interceptions in the worst peformance of his rookie season as the Tennessee Titans endured a 37-7 beating at the hands of the Jaguars.

The third pick in April's draft, Young had given the Titans a spark since taking over as the starter for Kerry Collins. He led the Titans (2-6) to wins in their last two games, giving them their first winning streak since the 2003 season.

Young struggled all afternoon against Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio's scheme, completing just 15-of-36 passes for 163 yards. He threw a 32-yard touchdown to Drew Bennett with under three minutes left and the game of reach.

"My confidence will always be high," Young said. "My confidence in my teammates is extremely high right now. To me, this was a game that slipped away from us."

"I'm not worried about Vince's confidence," Titans coach Jeff Fisher said. "Each week is a different challenge for him. I knew this week was going to be perhaps his biggest challenge because of the way they play."

Cornerback Rashean Mathis had two interceptions in the first half to set up a touchdown and field goal as the Jaguars (5-3) built a 20-0 advantage.

"We knew would we could do on defense," said Mathis, who left the game briefly in the first half with a leg injury before returning. "We got after them, that was our game plan. Our front guys to him and the backs were able to make some plays."

"I thought that was the key for us defensively to be able to slow them down early and offensively take advantage of some turnovers and punch it in," Del Rio said.

Nickel back Scott Starks returned another of Young's interceptions 55 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

The Jaguars also received an efficient performance from David Garrard, who was making his second straight start in place of the injured Byron Leftwich.

Garrard completed 12-of-22 passes for 177 yards and a career-high three touchdowns. He has won his last five starts overall.

After forcing a three-and-out on the Titans' first possession, the Jaguars drove 71 yards in 10 plays. Garrard found Ernest Wilford over the middle for an 11-yard touchdown.

Mathis' first interception in Tennessee territory set up Garrard's 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end George Wrighster that made it 14-0 with 3:54 left in the first quarter.

Josh Scobee kicked a 47-yard field goal 57 seconds into the second quarter to make it 17-0.

On the Titans' ensuing possession, Mathis intercepted Young again and broke off a 53-yard return to the Tennessee 2. That set up Scobee's 21-yard field goal.

Garrard continued the onslaught in the third quarter with a 22-yard TD pass to Wilford.

Starks' first career touchdown increased the advantage to 34-0 with 9:34 left in the third quarter.

Fred Taylor added 79 yards on 13 carries and rookie Maurice Jones-Drew added 56 on eight for the Jaguars for the Jaguars.

"We (stunk) out there today," said Titans running back Travis Henry, who rushed for 67 yards on 19 carries. "We thought we had a chance to beat them. This is really disappointing."
