Players' safety Shanahan's only concern after late-night scare

Oct 19, 2017 - 1:33 AM SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers acknowledged Tuesday they were aware of a report that linebackers Reuben Foster and Ray-Ray Armstrong were involved in an incident in downtown San Francisco at around 2 a.m. Monday morning, not long after the team flew home from its game at Washington.

Reportedly, Foster and Armstrong were exiting a club in the Union Square area of San Francisco when they became concerned about a car that was circling the area.

After requesting an escort to their car from a member of the club, two men got out of the car in question. One had an assault rifle, the other a handgun.

Foster and Armstrong reportedly ran to a nearby hotel and called police. They were not injured.

"They told me about it, told me everything that happened," 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan reported Wednesday. "It's just a reminder on how careful you've got to be. Definitely glad they got out of it OK. Sounded pretty dangerous, something pretty scary."

Shanahan didn't appear bothered that two of his players were out at that time of morning.

"You can look at it a bunch of different ways," he said. "I don't think everyone totally knows our exact lifestyle.

"Sunday night, after a game, I'm not making excuses for anyone, but just to be honest with you guys, Monday our first team meeting is at 1 (p.m.). We go over the game tape. It's all meetings. There's nothing physical. There's nothing on the field. Tuesday is the players' day off, then we see them Wednesday.

"Sunday night, for 90 percent of this league or whatever it is, that's a players' Friday night. Everyone handles their free time differently. I'm not going to get mad at a guy for putting in the work all week, those guys grinding, and then deciding to go out and do what most people do at their age at that time.

"I'd feel a lot differently if that was a Thursday night."
