Steelers' Gilbert suspended for violating PED policy

Nov 21, 2017 - 7:52 PM PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers right tackle Marcus Gilbert has been suspended four games for violating the league's drug policy. He tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

The Steelers announced the suspension Monday afternoon following practice. Gilbert did not speak with reporters, but he did tweet an apology.

"I apologize to my teammates, coaches and the entire Steelers family. Regretfully I inadvertently took a banned substance. I promise to come back in great shape and will be ready to play when my suspension is over."

Gilbert missed five games due to a hamstring injury this season. He missed two early in the season, tried to come back for the Chiefs game and reinjured it. He missed three more games before starting the past two games.

Before returning to the lineup before the Colts game two weeks ago, Gilbert said he returned to Florida during the Steelers' bye week and received treatment to help him recover.

"My hamstring feels good," Gilbert said Nov. 6. "The bye came at the right time. Unfortunately, I had a setback (against the Chiefs). The bye week was much needed. I took advantage of it. I went back home, got some treatment, saw my trainer. I'm feeling more confident than I did before. I'm taking it slowly. I'm going to gradually build up my reps during the week. By the end of the week I should be fine."

Gilbert will miss games against the Packers, Bengals, Ravens and Patriots. The game against the Patriots could determine the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

"We are disappointed that Marcus Gilbert has been suspended four games for using performance-enhancing substances," Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said. "He will not appeal the NFL's decision. The suspension is effective immediately, and he will not be permitted in the building until after the suspension has concluded following our game on Dec. 17."
