Brown, defense lead Dolphins past Chiefs

Nov 12, 2006 - 9:13 PM MIAMI (Ticker) -- For the second straight week, the Miami Dolphins used a lot of Ronnie Brown and a lot of defense to produce a victory.

Brown rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown and the Dolphins contained Larry Johnson en route to a 13-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Last Sunday, the Dolphins (3-6) registered the biggest upset of the season with a 31-13 victory at previously unbeaten Chicago behind Brown, who rushed for a career-high 157 yards and a defense that forced six turnovers.

Brown and the defense were a major reason why the Dolphins ended the Chiefs' three-game winning streak.

Brown carried 25 times, including a one-yard touchdown in the second quarter, which gave Miami a 13-0 lead.

"If you control the ball and keep their offense of the field you'll be fine," Brown said. "You can minimize their offensive plays. It does a lot for you as a team and it helps the offense stay in a rhythm if we are constantly driving the football."

Defensively, the Dolphins limited Johnson to 75 rushing yards and a touchdown. The Pro Bowler had rushed for 459 yards in his last three games.

"They played the run fairly well and loaded the box on us," Chiefs coach Herman Edwards said. "We got nothing going and they played with a lead most of the day. This was a field position game all the way."

Johnson's two-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter pulled Kansas City (5-4) within 13-10.

The 10th rushing touchdown of the season for Johnson came moments after Dolphins coach Nick Saban called for a reverse in his own territory. The play backfired as Brown fumbled as he was trying to hand off to Chris Chambers. Defensive end Jared Allen recovered and broke off a 20-yard return to the Miami 20.

"I think that was pretty much my fault," Brown said. "We had a bad (position) with each other and we are two guys trying to make something happen and I lost control of it trying to hand it off to him (Chambers)."

Kansas City also had a chance to mount a final drive, getting back the ball at its own 14 with 3:40 remaining. On 3rd-and-17 from the 7, Damon Huard found Eddie Kennison along the right sideline for 31 yards.

Linebacker Zach Thomas sacked Huard on the next play, again setting back the Chiefs. Huard then had two incompletions around a short pass to Dante Hall.

A former backup to Dan Marino in Miami who has played well in place of Trent Green (concussion), Huard completed just 15-of-38 passes for 201 yards.

"We just couldn't make plays on third down," Huard said. "Third and long is tough in this league. They did a goo job with their coverage underneath, tight man coverage, knocked some balls away. We had some chances to make some plays and we just couldn't get it done."

The Chiefs converted just 3-of-14 third-down conversions.

Joey Harrington went 19-of-35 for 201 yards for the Dolphins. His 46-yard completion off a flea flicker to Chambers down the right sideline set up Brown's one-yard TD that made it 13-0 with 8:09 left in the first half.

"It was a great play and it was called at a great time," Chambers said. "I didn't really know where I was on the field and I didn't realize I was that close to the end zone when I caught it."

Olindo Mare kicked field goals of 40 yards in the first quarter and 22 yards early in the second for the Dolphins.
