Texans intercept Garrard four times, beat Jaguars

Nov 12, 2006 - 9:33 PM JACKSONVILLE, Florida (Ticker) -- The Houston Texans took advantage of plenty of mistakes by David Garrard to win on the road for the first time in two years.

Sparked by their defense which intercepted Garrard four times, the Texans stopped a 12-game road losing streak with a 13-10 victory over the Jaguars.

Houston (3-6) won on the road for the first time since a 24-6 victory over Pittsburgh on December 8, 2004.

Dunta Robinson, Morlon Greenwood, Demarcus Faggins and Anthony Weaver had interceptions for Houston, which beat Jacksonville for the second time in three weeks after coasting to a 27-7 victory on October 29.

The win came at a price for the Texans, who lost quarterback David Carr to a bruised right shoulder early in the fourth quarter. He was injured after being hit by rookie linebacker Clint Ingram.

Carr completed 16-of-32 passes for 167 yards. He rushed for 48 yards on five attempts.

Garrard, who had been 2-0 as a starter this season since replacing Byron Leftwich, completed 15-of-34 passes for 214 yards.

"There is no description for how today went," Garrard said. "Lots of missed opportunities, I definitely did not play my best. I wasn't putting the ball in the right spots to let my receivers do their business. We didn't make the plays we needed; it was a tough day at the office."

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio defended his quarterback.

"Only one of the four interceptions was really his fault," Del Rio said. "The issue is concentration more than timing (between Garrard and the receivers)."

Rookie Maurice Jones-Drew scored on a three-yard run with under five minutes left to pull the Jaguars (5-4) within 13-10.

Despite the offensive miscues, the Jaguars looked like they were on their way to tying the game when Garrard found Cortez Hankton for 37 yards to the Texans 27. But the play was nullified when Reggie Williams was called for offensive interference.

The Jaguars were forced to punt, and the Texans ran out the clock after Samkon Gado converted a 4-and-1 play in Houston territory with 1:40 to play. Gado rushed for 67 yards on 17 carries.

"I tried to send a message to the team," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. "We deserved to win the game, our defense played great out there. I had the players behind me saying 'Coach let's go.' We need to be able to feel that way as a football team. That was a football team call."

Houston improved to 6-4 all-time against Jacksonville.

On the Texans' ensuing possession of the game, Carr had a 41-yard completion to Andre Johnson to the Jaguars 1. Two plays later, rookie Wali Lundy scored on a one-yard run.

Greenwood's interception in Jacksonville territory set up Kris Brown's 25-yard field goal with 4:52 left in the first quarter, which gave Houston a 10-0 lead.

Josh Scobee's 44-yard field goal two seconds into the second quarter pulled the Jaguars within 10-3.

Weaver's interception and 21-yard return to the Jacksonville 31 set up Brown's 28-yard field goal with 4:55 left in third quarter, which gave the Texans a 13-3 advantage.

"The defensive back made a great play on the ball and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time," Weaver said. "It's a defensive lineman's dream to get to the goal line on an interception. If I ever get there, I'm just going to lay down because I know how tired I'll be."
