Johnson rushes for two TDs to lead Chiefs past Raiders

Nov 19, 2006 - 9:04 PM KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Larry Johnson helped the Kansas City Chiefs write a familiar script against the Oakland Raiders.

Johnson rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns and rookie safety Jarrad Page intercepted Aaron Brooks in the end zone with 26 seconds remaining as the Chiefs held on for a 17-13 victory over the Raiders.

Sparked by Johnson and the return of quarterback Trent Green, the Chiefs (6-4) beat their bitter AFC West rivals for a seventh straight time. The wins have come by a combined 32 points.

Johnson's second TD, a one-yard run with 1:32 remaining, capped an 11-play, 80-yard drive and gave the Chiefs a 17-13 lead.

Brooks, who had missed the last seven games with a pectoral injury, tried to rally the Raiders (2-8) in the waning moments. His 39-yard completion to Ronald Curry moved the ball to the Kansas City 8 with 32 seconds left.

On the next play, Brooks locked onto Randy Moss, who was held without a catch, and had his pass picked off by Page, a backup free safety

"That was not a game-saving play," Chiefs cornerback Patrick Surtain said. "That was a season-saver."

Oakland fell to 0-4 against the AFC West this season and has lost 20 of its last 22 games against divisional foes.

"That was a very tough loss for us," Raiders coach Art Shell said. "Hopefully, one day we can get this thing turned around, and I believe we will."

Brooks completed 13-of-22 passes for 179 yards and touchdown with an interception. His two-yard TD pass to tight end Courtney Anderson with 19 seconds left in the second quarter gave the Raiders a 13-7 lead.

"His effort shows what he is capable of doing," Shell said.

The Chiefs also welcomed back Green, who suffered a severe concussion in the season opener. He went 9-of-16 for just 102 yards without a turnover.

"I wouldn't say I had any extra butterflies. I was just so anxious to get the thing started waking up this morning," Green said. "It's been hard, especially these last two or three weeks when I felt really good and felt like I could go out and play."

Green was without the services of Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez, who missed the game with a left shoulder injury.

Rather than relying on the passing game, Chiefs coach Herman Edwards relied on Johnson, who surpassed 1,000 yards on the season with his sixth 100-yard game of the season.

Johnson's five-yard touchdown run on the Chiefs' first possession opened the scoring.

Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 41-yard field goal with 22 seconds left in the first quarter and connected from 36 yards midway through the second to pull the Raiders within 7-6.

The Raiders lost running back LaMont Jordan to a left knee injury in the first quarter. In the second, starting offensive tackles Robert Gallery and Langston Walker were injured on the same play.
