Stover helps Ravens edge Patriots
Aug 8, 2008 - 3:55 AM By Mike Petraglia PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterFOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts (Ticker) -- Playing their first game since losing Super Bowl XLII in February, the New England Patriots looked like a team trying to shake off the rust on Thursday.
With each team resting approximately half of its regulars, Matt Stover hit a pair of the Ravens' three field goals and Le'Ron McClain ran for a touchdown as the Baltimore Ravens held on for a 16-15 triumph over the Patriots at Gillette Stadium in the preseason opener for both teams.
While he did dress, Tom Brady did not take a single snap for the Patriots, joining Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Mike Vrabel and Rodney Harrison as regulars who were in uniform but did not play. Stephen Gostkowski hit three field goals to provide the bulk of New England's offense.
The Ravens did not dress regulars Ed Reed, Chris McAlister, Samari Rolle, Willis McGahee, Todd Heap, Demetrius Williams and Mark Clayton.
Kyle Boller, the expected opening day quarterback for Ravens, did not get to rest. He started and led the Ravens to a field goal on their opening drive and finished 11-of-15 for 102 yards and an interception.
After Troy Smith struggled, first-round selection Joe Flacco was sacked on his first series and fumbled, turning the ball over to the Patriots at the Baltimore 31. Six plays later, Lamont Jordan scored from one yard out for New England's only touchdown.
Matt Cassel, who has been Brady's backup since 2005, struggled in his time with the first unit. He completed only one of four pass attempts for 11 yards with an interception and a fumble.
