Giants seek 11th straight road win
Sep 9, 2008 - 7:03 PM NY GIANTS (1-0) at ST. LOUIS (0-1), 1:00pm, EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The New York Giants have forgotten what losing away from Giants Stadium is like. They would like to put off that feeling in the new season for as long as possible.
The Giants, who won three road playoff games en route to a Super Bowl title last season, seek their 11th straight road victory Sunday when they visit the St. Louis Rams.
While New York only went 3-5 at home last year, it enjoyed uncanny success on the road. After getting torched in a 45-35 season-opening loss at Dallas, the Giants reeled off seven straight road wins, then added road victories at Tampa Bay, Dallas and Green Bay.
New York will be trying to build on a season-opening, 16-7 victory over the Washington Redskins but will be looking for better production in the red zone.
Fired up as they opened defense of their Super Bowl title, the Giants got off to an explosive start, scoring on their first four possessions to build a 16-0 midway through the second quarter. But they also had to settle for three field goals, two inside the red zone.
"We did a good job moving the ball so hopefully we continue to run the ball well, get down into scoring positions, and instead of settling for field goals, get some touchdowns," New York quarterback Eli Manning said.
After opening 0-2 last season, the Giants are seeking only their second 2-0 start in five seasons under coach Tom Coughlin.
St. Louis needs improvement in all areas after opening with the season with a thud - a 38-3 loss at Philadelphia. The Rams picked up where they left off last year, when they were an NFC-worst 3-13. Donovan McNabb threw three touchdown passes against St. Louis' porous defense.
To make matters even worse, wide receiver Drew Bennett fractured the metatarsal bone in his left foot against the Eagles and will be sidelined for at least a month. Bennett suffered the injury while making a four-yard reception on the Rams' first possession of the game.
