Bills set sights on 3-0 start
Sep 16, 2008 - 3:12 PM OAKLAND (1-1) AT BUFFALO (2-0), 1:00 pm EDTORCHARD PARK, New York (Ticker) -- The Buffalo Bills have been among the NFL's biggest early-season surprises.
The Bills look to continue their stellar start when they host the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.
Buffalo has not won its first three games since the 1992 season, when the franchise was in the midst of four consecutive trips to the Super Bowl - all losses.
While no one is about to confuse this season's edition with the powerhouses of the early 1990s, the Bills (2-0) are coming off an impressive win at Jacksonville and have yielded just 26 points in beating a pair of playoff teams from 2007.
"I think encouraged is a good way to describe it, but for me personally, I still feel like we have a lot to prove," Bills quarterback Trent Edwards said. "It's Week Two, it's nothing monumental. It's nothing that we should be getting overly excited about, but it's encouraging. We're excited, and we're getting ready for the Oakland Raiders."
Edwards completed his first 10 passes and finished 20-of-25 for 239 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions in rallying the Bills to a pair of late scoring drives, including a 7-yard scoring pass to rookie James Hardy, in the win over the Jaguars.
Watching Edwards bring the Bills back in sweltering 95-degree conditions made the comeback victory even more impressive to Buffalo coach Dick Jauron.
"(Trent) has shown that he's resourceful," Jauron said. "He's tough, he's smart, and he's got a presence about him. He certainly played an outstanding game."
The Raiders (1-1) also come in on a positive note after manhandling the Kansas City Chiefs, 23-8, courtesy of an overpowering running game led by rookie Darren McFadden.
But the victory was overshadowed by reports that team owner Al Davis is set to fire second-year coach Lane Kiffin sometime during the week.
Kiffin acknowledged Monday that such speculation is not the best way to prepare his team for a game.
"I don't think it helps," he said. "So all I can do is try to get our coaching staff to stay together in this type of situation, our players to stay together, and they did it last week. Our players did a great job in not allowing it to be a distraction for them."
McFadden relieved an injured Justin Fargas and rumbled for 164 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. The No. 4 overall pick reeled off runs of 50, 24, 22 and 21 yards. Michael Bush added 90 yards on 16 carries as the Raiders amassed 300 yards on the ground.
