Chiefs looking to build off first win, visit Panthers
Sep 30, 2008 - 5:45 PM Kansas City (1-3) at Carolina (3-1), 1:00 pm EDTCHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Larry Johnson and the Kansas City Chiefs finally put their franchise-worst losing streak to an end. Now, they will try to win on the road.
Fresh off their first win in nearly a year, the Chiefs will visit the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
Johnson rushed for 198 yards and two touchdowns last Sunday as Kansas City snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 33-19 victory over the previously unbeaten Denver Broncos.
The Chiefs posted their first win since a 12-10 victory over the Oakland Raiders on October 21, 2007. Kansas City lost its final nine games last season and its first three this year.
"Those kids deserve a win," Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said. "Our fans deserve a win too. We haven't won a football game in quite some time. I've never been in a drought like this before. Now we've got to try and build on this win."
Kansas City rode the power running of Johnson, who carried 28 times in collecting his 29th 100-yard game. It was his highest total since rushing for 201 yards against Cincinnati in Week 17 of the 2005 season.
The Panthers also found a new dynamic to their offense last week as the passing attack flourished in their second game with receiver Steve Smith.
Jake Delhomme completed 20-of-29 passes for 294 yards and two touchdowns to lead Carolina to a 24-9 win over the Atlanta Falcons.
Delhomme found Smith for a 56-yard touchdown pass and Muhsin Muhammad for a 36-yard scoring strike to help the Panthers bounce back from their first loss of the season.
"Muhsin and Steve both did an outstanding job with some pretty tight coverage," Carolina coach John Fox said. "Jake did a nice job placing the ball on those plays."
Smith was suspended for the first two games due to a preseason brawl with teammate Ken Lucas, but he shook of any rust - as well as a couple defenders - last week.
Smith, who finished with six catches for 96 yards, gave the Panthers a 14-6 lead late in the first half when he ran a square route to the middle of the field and broke two tackles for his first touchdown of the season.
