Bills hope to head into bye week with another win
Sep 30, 2008 - 11:38 PM BUFFALO (4-0) AT ARIZONA (2-2), 4:00 pm EDTGLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- The Buffalo Bills, the NFL's best feel-good story through the first month of the season, have an opportunity to accomplish something they have not done since their glory days in the early 1990s.
The Bills seek only the fourth 5-0 start in franchise history Sunday when they visit the Arizona Cardinals in their final game before the bye week.
The Cardinals could be without star wide receiver Anquan Boldin, who was knocked out in last week's 56-35 loss to the New York Jets after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit from safety Eric Smith late in the fourth quarter.
Buffalo's only 5-0 starts came in 1964, 1980 and 1991, when the Bills made the second of their four straight losing Super Bowl appearances. The Bills have managed only one winning season this decade, going 9-7 in 2004.
The Bills likely will be without cornerback Terrence McGee, who suffered a sprained left medial collateral ligament against the Rams. He was hobbling in the locker room Monday, and coach Dick Jauron declined to speculate how long he could be sidelined.
"He was uncomfortable (Monday)," Jauron told the Buffalo News. "He's not getting around very well. We'll just have to see where this goes."
McGee has been an integral part of a defense that is giving up only 15.8 points per game, the league's fifth-best mark. If he is unable to play Sunday, first-round draft pick Leodis McKelvin likely will start in his place.
The defense keyed last week's 31-14 win at St. Louis, as Jabari Greer's 33-yard interception return for a touchdown erased a 14-13 deficit and triggered a 17-point fourth quarter. The Bills won their third straight game when trailing in the fourth quarter.
Trent Edwards joined Hall of Famer Jim Kelly as the only Buffalo quarterbacks to lead the team to three straight wins when facing a deficit in the final period.
With a win Sunday, Jauron (18-18) will join Marv Levy (.615), Wade Phillips (.604), Lou Saban (.598) and Chuck Knox (.507) as the only Buffalo coaches with a winning percentage above .500.
As of Monday, Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt still did not know if Boldin suffered a concussion. However, the talented receiver passed a series of spinal and neurological tests before leaving New York and has not been ruled out of Sunday's game. Smith received a one-game suspension for a late hit.
"Seeing (Boldin) on the field, you realize how much he means to the offense, how much he means to the organization," Arizona safety Adrian Wilson said. "All that talk about his contract and all that, hey, he put everything on the line."
Boldin is the Cardinals' leading receiver with 27 catches for 366 yards and five touchdowns.
