Following bye week, Titans look to continue perfect start
Oct 14, 2008 - 4:31 PM Tennessee (5-0) at Kansas City (1-4), 1:00 pm EDTKANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- It might not always be pretty, but Kerry Collins and the Tennessee Titans just keep winning.
Collins will attempt to lead the Titans to a franchise-best 6-0 start Sunday when they visit the Kansas City Chiefs with both teams coming off bye weeks.
Two weeks ago, Collins tossed an 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end Alge Crumpler with 1:56 remaining as Tennessee rallied for a 13-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens.
Tennessee headed into its bye week unbeaten - a mark that has surprised everyone except coach Jeff Fisher.
"I don't think any of you (media) guys thought we were going to go 5-0 into the bye week," Fisher said. "I did."
Fisher's team remained perfect because Collins saved his best work for last. Through three quarters against the Ravens, he was held to 91 passing yards.
But the 35-year-old quarterback, who has led the Titans to four wins after taking over for the injured Vince Young, engineered an 11-play, 80-yard drive that was assisted by two Baltimore penalties.
Collins was helped by a critical third down penalty against Terrell Suggs, who was flagged after hitting the quarterback in the helmet, and an infraction for 12 players on the field two plays before the score.
The Chiefs are not having a good season, but they did end one's teams undefeated run earlier in the campaign.
Larry Johnson rushed for 198 yards and two touchdowns as Kansas City defeated the then-unbeaten Broncos, 33-19, on September 28.
But the following week in the Chiefs' last contest, Johnson was held two yards on seven carries in a 34-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Kansas City managed just 127 yards from scrimmage and eight first downs.
Johnson has been inconsistent this season, rushing for 319 of his 417 yards in a two-game span. He scored all three of his touchdowns in those two contests.
