Cable, Raiders look to build off dramatic win
Oct 21, 2008 - 8:14 PM Oakland (2-4) at Baltimore (3-3), 1:00 pm EDTBALTIMORE (Ticker) -- Interim coach Tom Cable said the Oakland Raiders are 1-0. Unfortunately, the season started seven weeks ago.
Cable and the Raiders narrowly escaped another public relations nightmare last week and hope to build off their momentum this Sunday when they visit the Baltimore Ravens.
Sebastian Janikowski connected on a career-long 57-yard field goal with less than three minutes remaining in overtime to lift Oakland to a 16-13 victory over the New York Jets last Sunday.
"The most important thing is, we're gonna leave this building 1-0 today," Cable said after his first win as a head coach. "We're gonna go to our families and we're gonna eat dinner tonight 1-0 and it's gonna taste better, it's gonna feel good."
Not long before the game-winner sailed crisply through the middle of the uprights, the Raiders appeared to have had the win wrapped up already.
Jay Feely's 52-yard attempt to send the game into overtime with three seconds left in regulation hit the left goalpost, presumably the new Raiders coach's first win. But he would have to wait a little while longer.
Cable, who replaced Lane Kiffin three weeks ago, called a timeout just before Feely's kick, erasing the miss and giving the Jets another chance. Feely capitalized this time, drilling the field goal to send the game into overtime.
After New York won the coin toss, it appeared Cable would be the target of some negative media attention for costing his team a win.
But the clubs stumbled through several possessions of overtime before JaMarcus Russell completed a pair of key passes to set up Jankowski's heroics.
Willis McGahee accounted for 152 yards and a touchdown to help lead the Ravens past the Miami Dolphins, 27-13, last Sunday.
McGahee rushed for a season-high 105 yards on 19 carries and caught two passes for 47 yards as Baltimore halted a three-game losing steak.
"The whole team needed this win, basically," McGahee said. "We were going on a little losing streak and if we would have lost, it probably would have determined our season."
Ravens rookie quarterback Joe Flacco completed 17-of-23 passes for 232 yards and a score.
Flacco came into the game with eight interceptions to just one touchdown, but was very effective in his best start since being drafted 18th overall in April.
