Losing streaks on line when 49ers host Rams
Nov 11, 2008 - 8:24 PM St. Louis (2-7) at San Francisco (2-7), 4:05 pm ESTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Rams and San Francisco 49ers have a lot in common - and few of them are positive.
The struggling Rams visit the reeling 49ers on Sunday in a matchup of bottom-feeders in the NFC West.
Both teams already have fired their head coaches this season but it has done little to impact their respective fortunes.
San Francisco absorbed its sixth consecutive defeat and fell to 0-2 under Mike Singletary following Monday night's 29-24 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
The 49ers were stopped on a pair of running plays at the goal line in the waning seconds, with backup Michael Robinson swallowed up on a fourth-down play up the middle.
Frank Gore also was stopped on third down after San Francisco burned about 20 seconds before spiking the ball to kill the clock.
"I think we could have done a lot better job," Singletary said. "We weren't quite set for whatever reason. It looked like Shaun (Hill) was taking all day but we have to have guys aligned right or it is a penalty. So we had to wait on guys before we could spike it. We lost about 10 or 12 seconds and that was ridiculous."
Hill, who started his first game since the benching of J.T. O'Sullivan, finished 19-of-40 for 217 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
St. Louis has endured struggles of its own, tumbling to its third consecutive loss with last weekend's 47-3 bludgeoning at the hands of the New York Jets.
The Rams had appeared to turn their season around when Jim Haslett replaced the fired Scott Linehan, posting impressive wins over the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys.
But after a narrow 23-16 loss at the New England Patriots, the Rams unraveled in a 34-13 loss to Arizona before they were steamrolled by the Jets, who rolled to a 40-0 halftime lead.
"It was embarrassing, that was bad football all the way around," Haslett said. "You turn the ball over, we had guys fumbling, interceptions. It was over at halftime."
Although Haslett benched Marc Bulger in favor of Trent Green at halftime, he has not committed to a starter for Sunday's game.
The Rams are hoping to get back running back Steven Jackson, who has missed the last three games with a thigh injury.
