Jets seek first six-game winning streak in decade
Nov 25, 2008 - 4:36 PM Denver (6-5) at NY Jets (8-3), 4:15 pm, ESTEAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- After handing the Tennessee Titans their first loss of the season, the New York Jets are flying high.
The Jets seek their first six-game winning streak in a decade on Sunday when they host the Denver Broncos in a battle of division leaders.
New York (8-3) has not won six in a row since finishing 12-4 in 1998 en route to the AFC title game against the John Elway-led Broncos.
The Jets are coming off a dominant performance at Tennessee, rushing for 192 yards in a 34-13 victory, and have now doubled their win total from last season (4-12).
After posting wins at New England (34-31 in overtime) and Tennessee in a 10-day span, the Jets can make a claim that this is their best team since the 1998 club.
While maintaining a one-game lead over New England (7-4) in the AFC East, a first-round bye in the playoffs may now be within the Jets' grasp.
New York remained tied with Pittsburgh (8-3) for the second-best record in the AFC, although the Steelers own the tiebreaker advantage.
While it may be premature, there is even some talk now of the Jets and Giants meeting in the first all-New York Super Bowl. The Giants are 10-1 and also have won five in a row.
"The excitement is very high right now," Jets coach Eric Mangini said. "Both teams are doing great. We are in the city of New York. Everything is going good for us. There is a lot of excitement and a lot of people are jumping on the Jets bandwagon."
Brett Favre threw his first interception in three games, but was otherwise efficient, completing 25-of-32 passes for 224 yards and two yards. Thomas Jones churned out 96 yards on the ground.
"I think we're jelling at the right time," New York safety Kerry Rhodes said.
The Jets (29.4 ppg) boast the second-highest scoring offense in the NFL, trailing only the Giants (29.9 ppg).
They will try to keep their offense in high gear about the porous Broncos, who rank 28th in the league in total defense.
"No game is an easy task," Denver receiver Brandon Stokley said. "Especially on the road in New York -- they're probably the hottest team right now in the NFL. We've got to play a lot better than we did."
Denver (6-5) was embarrassed at home last week, suffering a 31-10 loss to the lowly Oakland Raiders. However, the Broncos maintained a two-game lead over San Diego (4-7) in the AFC West.
Last week marked the fifth time that Denver has allowed 30 or more points in a game this season.
Denver quarterback Jay Cutler did not throw a touchdown pass last week for the first time in 12 games.
