Bills attempt to build on huge performance
Nov 25, 2008 - 4:48 PM San Francisco (3-8) at Buffalo (6-5), 1 pm ESTORCHARD PARK, New York (Ticker) -- Before embarking on a challenging December schedule, the Buffalo Bills host the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
The Bills still have aspirations of reaching the playoffs for the first time since 1999 but will need help over the final five weeks of the season.
Buffalo currently is a game behind New England and Indianapolis for the AFC's final wild card.
After facing the lowly Niners, the Bills play their final four games against teams who currently are all over .500.
Last Sunday, the Bills took advantage of the AFC's worst team in a 54-31 destruction of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Trent Edwards threw three touchdowns and ran for two more scores as the Bills came within four points of matching their 42-year-old record for points in a game. Buffalo converted five turnovers into 20 points.
"I always try to be confident," said Edwards, who had thrown eight interceptions and lost two fumbles in his previous 13 quarters leading up to the Kansas City game. "Even when I'm not, I try to act like I am. That's the position you have to be in."
The Bills also received a big effort from rookie cornerback Leodis McKelvin, who registered a pair of interceptions, one of which he returned 64 yards for a touchdown.
While the Bills have slim playoff hopes, the Niners are playing to save interim coach Mike Singletary's job.
Since replacing Mike Nolan, Singletary has posted a 1-3 record. However, the Niners have showed more fight, including in last week's 35-22 loss to Dallas when they got down big and continued to fight throughout the game.
The Niners never were able to get the running game going last week as Frank Gore rushed for just 26 yards on 14 carries. He has rushed for 299 yards and two TDs in his previous three games.
This is the first meeting between the teams in Buffalo since 1998.
