Holmgren's Seahawks seek to end six-game skid vs. Rams
Dec 9, 2008 - 8:23 PM Seattle (2-11) at St. Louis (2-11) 1:00 pm ESTST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Mike Holmgren's swan song wasn't supposed to end like this.
Holmgren's Seattle Seahawks look to end a six-game skid on Sunday against the equally woeful St. Louis Rams.
The winningest coach in franchise history, Holmgren announced that this would be his 10th and final year in Seattle prior to the start of the season.
Assistant head coach Jim Mora Jr. will take over for Holmgren at the end of the season, which will end with the Seahawks missing the playoffs for the first time in six years.
Needless to say, Holmgren's final season has not gone as expected. The Seahawks are enduring their worst season since going a franchise-worst 2-14 in 1992.
Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck has been in and out of the lineup with a bulging disk in his back, and the defense is among the worst in the league. Yet the team has not quit, as evidenced by a 24-21 loss to New England in which the Seahawks led for most of the game.
Backup Seneca Wallace was 20-for-28 for 212 yards passing and a career high-tying three touchdowns.
"This game showed that the players are giving me everything they've got," Holmgren said.
Seattle came up short again, though, as Sammy Morris scored the go-ahead touchdown with 2:44 to play.
"I'd rather take one catch and win the game," said wide receiver Deion Branch, who caught four passes for 88 yards and a pair of scores against his former team. "It's sad, man ... You'd almost rather lose by three touchdowns than to lose that way."
Meanwhile, St. Louis' run of futility stretches even longer than Seattle's. The Rams dropped their seventh straight game, 34-10, to Arizona last week.
St. Louis also has lost seven straight to the Seahawks, including a 37-13 drubbing in Seattle in Week Three.
