Schenn leads Kings over Ducks 4-1

Sep 20, 2009 - 5:06 AM LOS ANGELES(AP) -- Brayden Schenn, Los Angeles' No. 1 draft pick, scored his first two goals of the preseason and Ryan Smyth also had a goal to lead the Kings to a 4-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night.

Schenn, the fifth overall selection in the draft, is the brother of last year's fifth overall pick - Toronto defenseman Luke Schenn. The Kings' 18-year-old center spent the previous two seasons with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL, scoring 32 goals in 2008-09.

Rookie Jonathan Bernier made 19 saves after being staked to a 3-0 lead.

Bernier spent the previous two seasons with Manchester of the AHL, but recorded his first NHL victory on opening night of the 2007-08 season against Anaheim with 26 saves in a 4-1 win in London - the Ducks' first regular-season game as defending Stanley Cup champions.

Schenn opened the scoring on a power play at 4:10 of the first period, getting a centering pass from Jack Johnson and converting his own rebound while Saku Koivu was serving a hooking penalty.

Smyth, who was acquired from Colorado on July 3 in a trade that sent defensemen Kyle Quincey and Tom Preissing to the Avalanche, scored the Kings' second goal. He carried the puck through the right circle with Anaheim defenseman Ryan Whitney trailing the play and jammed the puck past Jonas Hiller at 10:36 of the second period.

Less than 5 minutes later, defenseman Thomas Hickey carried the puck into the Anaheim zone and faked a slap shot at the top of the right circle before sliding a crisp cross-ice pass to Schenn, who beat Hiller high to the glove side with a short wrist shot. Hiller finished with 22 saves.

Coming off a 4-3 overtime victory over Phoenix in which they were outshot 30-2 in the first period and trailed 3-0 with 10 minutes left in regulation, the Ducks got on the board 32 seconds before the second intermission as Teemu Selanne set up Koivu's power-play goal while Kings defenseman Alec Martinez was off for holding.

The Kings and Ducks have one more preseason meeting, on Sept. 27 at Anaheim, and will face off six more times during the regular season.

Anze Kopitar scored an empty-net goal for the Kings with 15 seconds remaining.
