Torres helps Blue Jackets top Bruins 4-2
Sep 27, 2009 - 2:02 AM BOSTON(AP) -- Raffi Torres scored one third-period goal and then set up Nikita Filatov with the go-ahead tally Saturday night, lifting the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 4-2 preseason victory over the Boston Bruins. With one preseason game left, the Blue Jackets rested most of their top players, including Rick Nash and goalie Steve Mason, the Calder Trophy winner as the NHL's top rookie last season. They still rallied for their fourth straight win - two over the Bruins - to go to 4-2-1 on the preseason.
It was the preseason finale for the Bruins, who open the regular season against Washington next Thursday night - the first of five straight home games to start the season. They finished the preseason 5-2-1.
With the Blue Jackets down 2-1, Torres tapped a pass from Derick Brassard past Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask at 6:43 of the third period. Torres then delivered a pass to Filatov, who shoveled a short back-hander past Rask at 12:35.
Derek Dorsett added a power play goal with 2:22 left - after Chuck Kobasew and Shawn Thornton of the Bruins engaged in spirited fights with Michael Blunder and Jared Boll of the Blue Jackets, respectively.
Milan Lucic assisted on both Boston goals.
Matthew Calvert opened the scoring for Columbus 2:42 into the game, before Vladimir Sobotka scored later in the opening period. Zdeno Chara, on the power play, gave Boston a 2-1 lead 5:56 into the second period.
Earlier in the day, the Bruins promoted director of hockey operations Don Sweeney to assistant general manager and also announced they had trimmed the roster down to 24 by sending 10 players, including goalie Dany Sabourin, to Providence of the American Hockey League.
