Parenteau nets winner as Isles top Caps
Nov 6, 2011 - 2:28 AM Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - P.A. Parenteau scored the game-winner with 1:46 remaining in regulation, as the Islanders snapped a six-game slide with a 5-3 victory over the Capitals.Parenteau and Frans Nielsen each had a goal and two assists for New York, which tied a season-high in goals.
Alex Ovechkin, Joel Ward and Brooks Laich all scored for Washington, which was coming off a 5-1 win at Carolina on Friday.
Rick DiPietro made 25 saves in the win, while Tomas Vokoun was beaten four times on 34 shots to take the loss.
With time winding down, Vokoun allowed Milan Jurcina's slap shot from the point to slip under his pads, and Parenteau was there to stuff in the difference maker while falling to the ice.
John Tavares sealed things with an empty-netter with 61 seconds on the clock.
"It's a good feeling to win against a really good hockey team," Parenteau said.
The Caps, playing their first back-to-back of the season, jumped out to a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Ward and Ovechkin, the latter's coming on a one- timer from between the circles with 1:19 showing.
Nielsen backhanded in his own rebound 1:41 into the second frame and assisted on Brian Rolston's tying goal with 3:05 remaining in the period.
"If we came out in the second period like we did the first...it probably would have been over," Capitals head coach Bruce Boudreau said.
Washington's Matt Martin and Laich traded goals in the first 9:12 of the final period.
