Blue Jackets hold on to take down Jets

Nov 13, 2011 - 3:17 AM
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Steve Mason made 35 saves and rookie Ryan Johansen scored two goals to carry to Columbus Blue Jackets to a 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

Mark Stuart scored a short-handed goal with 3:45 remaining in regulation to pull the Jets within 2-1, but Mason and the Blue Jackets held on for just their third win of the season.

Ondrej Pavelec made 25 saves for Winnipeg, which has dropped five straight overall and has not beaten the Blue Jackets since December 9, 2005 -- a span of six games.

"I don't think we played as smart as we needed to play," Jets head coach Claude Noel said. "We're just a young team."

Columbus had lost three straight and came in 2-12-1 for an NHL-low five points, but Johansen got the hosts started on the right foot with a slap shot from the right circle just 53 seconds after the initial faceoff.

Mason turned aside 12 shots in the first and 10 in the second to maintain the lead, while Johansen backhanded his second goal past Pavelec 4:06 into the final period for a two-goal cushion.

It proved to be the game-winner after the Jackets recovered from Stuart's short-handed tally.

"We played a full 60 minutes of intense hockey," Johansen said. "We carried it throughout the game."
