Jets leave Devils in the dust with late tallies
Dec 4, 2011 - 3:56 AMEvander Kane had two goals, including an empty-netter in the final minute, and Alexander Burmistrov also scored for the Jets, who have won six of their last nine and improved to 2-1 on a five-game homestand.
Ondrej Pavelec stopped 23 shots in the win, including all seven he faced in the third period.
"It's good to see when you're holding onto those one-goal leads, the third period lead," said Stuart. "It shows that you're a team that is learning how to win. I feel like the best teams in the league they get up by one, two goals and they shut the door and that's it."
Adam Henrique and Patrik Elias scored for the Devils, who are 0-3 on a four- game road trip, while Johan Hedberg allowed three goals on 19 shots with a couple of big mistakes.
The third goal was ugly. Stuart's go-ahead tally was nothing more than a shot he threw on net from a sharp angle on the left side, but it deflected off Hedberg's stick and trickled through his legs for a 3-2 lead.
"We're at one of those points in the season right now where we're facing a bit of adversity," said Devils coach Peter DeBoer.
Earlier, Kane gave the Jets a 1-0 edge just 1:42 into the game when he deflected Dustin Byfuglien's point shot. Henrique tied the game for New Jersey about four minutes later on a snap shot from the right side.
Elias' power play goal, on a shot from the right side that was tipped, moved the Devils in front 2-1 with 2:43 left in the second period. But Burmistrov tied it at 2-2 on a short-handed tally just 67 seconds later.
On the play, Hedberg's attempted clear was snagged near the boards by Bryan Little and sent into the slot for Burmistrov's one-timer.
