Panthers snap three-game skid with SO win over Flames

Dec 17, 2011 - 5:00 AM
Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Stephen Weiss scored the winner in the shootout as the Florida Panthers took a 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames.

Sean Bergenheim scored twice while Jose Theodore stopped 24 shots for the Panthers, who snapped a three-game slide.

"It was one of those games that just built up towards the end," said Florida head coach Kevin Dineen. "We really played as a team tonight and it was nice to get those two points."

Olli Jokinen had a goal and an assist and Rene Bourque also scored for the Flames, who have dropped three straight.

Leland Irving, the 26th overall pick of the 2006 draft, made his NHL debut and stopped 39 shots.

"After the first two shots the adrenaline took over," said Irving. "I just tried to keep it simple and not try to overplay the puck. It's kind of a blur right now. It would have been nice to get the two points, but we'll go back and look at the video and see what we can work on."

In the fourth round of the shootout, Weiss skated in and slipped a low backhand into the net. Theodore then preserved the win by deflecting Lee Stempniak's wrister and knocking it out of the air with his stick.

Florida trailed, 2-1, after Bourque swept in the puck from the low-right side on the power play at the 3:55 mark of the third.

However, Bergenheim tied the game with 4:35 left when Shawn Matthias blasted a shot on net from the slot that was stopped, but the rebound sat on the doorstep and Bergenheim snapped it in.

The first goal of the game went to Florida when Bergenheim banged in a loose puck from the slot 6:57 into the first period.

Jokinen tied it halfway through the first when Curtis Glencross threw a shot on goal from the low-left circle and Jokinen snapped home the rebound.

Neither side scored in the second period as Irving turned aside 13 shots and Theodore made 11 saves.
