Jets welcome back Selanne, take down Ducks
Dec 18, 2011 - 4:16 AM Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - Zach Bogosian had a goal and two assists, as the Winnipeg Jets took down Teemu Selanne and the Anaheim Ducks, 5-3.The Jets welcomed Selanne back to town on Saturday night. The 41-year-old returned to the city where his decorated career began for the first time in nearly 16 years. Selanne broke into the NHL in 1992-93 with the Jets and spent three-plus seasons there. He had two assists against his former club.
"Just thank you. Obviously the support," Selanne said. "(For) twenty years it has been so special and tonight really make my whole...my whole career pretty much. That was something I always can remember. There is always a big piece of Winnipeg people in my heart. That's very important."
Kyle Wellwood had a goal and an assist for the Jets, who have won nine of their last 11 at home. Blake Wheeler, Alexander Burmistrov and Andrew Ladd also lit the lamp.
Chris Mason made 33 saves for the victors.
Corey Perry had two goals for the Ducks, who haven't won on the road since October 27, going 0-8-3 in 11 games since. Niklas Hagman also scored.
Dan Ellis turned aside 26-of-31 shots.
The "Teemu" chants started early and the electric crowd got the Jets going. Just 4:54 into the contest, Nik Antropov threw the puck in front from along the left boards. Wellwood, who fell to the ice, put home his own rebound to make it 1-0.
Wheeler's power-play goal over a minute later extended Winnipeg's margin. Dustin Byfuglien's shot from the left circle was stopped, but Wheeler put the rebound through Ellis' legs.
Anaheim scored two late goals to tie the game. Selanne flicked the puck high into the air from around his own blue line. The bouncing puck landed in front of Mason and Hagman batted the puck into the back of the net at the 14:34 mark.
Perry's snap shot from the slot made it 2-2 with 1:34 left.
Burmistrov gave the Jets the lead for good just 31 seconds into the middle stanza on a wrister from the right circle.
Ladd lit the lamp with 1:40 remaining to make it 4-2. Ladd's shot from the right point found the back of the net due to Ellis being knocked down because of traffic in front.
Bogosian's slapper found the back of the net 2:49 into the third period to make it 5-2.
Perry's tip-in at the 10:26 mark accounted for the final margin.
"To be honest with you it was hard as heck to be out there," Mason said. "At the beginning of the game you're trying to communicate with your D men but it was kind of pointless because I could barely even hear myself. It was pretty cool though to see what he (Teemu Selanne) means to the city and how high he holds Winnipeg in his heart."
