Kane's OT goal lifts Jets over Kings, 1-0

Dec 30, 2011 - 5:16 AM Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - Evander Kane scored 69 seconds into overtime, lifting the Winnipeg Jets to a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday.

Chris Mason made 31 saves for his 22nd career shutout and first of the season for the Jets, who have won three of their past four games.

Jonathan Bernier made 26 saves for Los Angeles, which had won four of five entering the game.

In the overtime session, Kane intially put a shot on net from the left circle. He corralled his own rebound and fed Ron Hainsey, who fanned on a shot from the right circle, but the bouncing puck made its way to Kane, who slammed it home from in front to win it for the Jets.

"I thought we played a really good first period. Second we gave them too many power plays. And in the third I thought it was so so. We played on our heels a little bit, but I think we wanted to get at least a point out of the game. I thought Mason was outstanding," Winnipeg head coach Claude Noel said.

The Kings were unable to capitalize on five power-play opportunities, including a two-man advantage for 1:52 in the middle of the second period.

The Jets were 0-for-2 on the power play, and also had a two-man advantage early in the third period.

"We had an opportunity 5 on 3, they had an opportunity 5 on 3. It's tough," Los Angeles head coach Darryl Sutter said. "So it's better to look at it the other way and take the point right?"

Los Angeles had a 25-17 shots advantage after the first two periods.

Game Notes

Los Angeles has four power-play goals in its last 17 games...The Jets stay home to take on Toronto on Saturday, while the Kings come back to Los Angeles to square off against the Canucks on Saturday.
