Senators edge Sabres in SO

Jan 1, 2012 - 6:58 AM Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Bobby Butler scored in the fifth round of the shootout, lifting the Ottawa Senators to a 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres.

Chris Neil and Matt Carkner scored for the Senators, who got 26 saves from Craig Anderson.

Brad Boyes and Paul Gaustad tallied for the Sabres, who have lost three straight games.

Jhonas Enroth stopped 44-of-46 shots in defeat.

"I think our battle was there but we just came up short," said Buffalo head coach Lindy Ruff. "We just have to keep grinding it out and we'll get our wins."

In the shootout, Butler deked a few times before lifting a wrister past the pads of Enroth for the game-winner after Anderson stopped a Drew Stafford wrister on Buffalo's final attempt.

"After hitting a couple of posts tonight it felt good to get that one," said Butler. "Getting two points tonight is great for us, we need all the points we can get."

Boyes put the Sabres ahead on the power play at the 4:06 mark of the first period. Jordan Leopold put a shot on net from the right point, and Boyes pounced on the rebound just to the right of the net.

Carkner tied it 1:55 into the second with a wrister just underneath the crossbar from the right circle, but Gaustad tipped home a pass by Leopold 1:32 later to give the Sabres the lead right back.

Ottawa, though, tied it again a few minutes later when Neil's backhander on a breakaway beat Enroth.

The Senators received a power play late in the third period following a Nathan Gerbe hooking penalty, but Buffalo killed off the penalty to send the game into overtime.

Game Notes

Ottawa finished 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Sabres were 1-of-5 on the man advantage...The Senators outshot the Sabres 43-26 in regulation.
