Hartnell tallies twice, Flyers down Devils
Jan 21, 2012 - 10:50 PM Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Scott Hartnell scored two power-play goals, Ilya Bryzgalov made 30 saves and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the New Jersey Devils, 4-1, at Prudential Center.Wayne Simmonds added an empty-net goal to go with two assists for the Flyers, who have won four of their last six games.
"It doesn't feel like there's daylight," said Philadelphia head coach Peter Laviolette. "Every day feels like a grind. There's always people in front of you, there's always people chasing you. You just got to keep working."
Following the victory, Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren revealed forward Danny Briere will be out indefinitely with a concussion. Briere registered just one shot in 16:57 of ice time.
To make matters worse for the Flyers, forward Jaromir Jagr suffered a lower- body injury in the first period and did not return.
Martin Brodeur stopped 16 shots for New Jersey, which has dropped consecutive home games by 4-1 scores on the heels of a three-game win streak.
"Specials teams was the difference in the game," said Devils head coach Peter DeBoer. New Jersey was 0-for-6 on the power play, while the Flyers were 2- for-5.
Philadelphia's Matt Read opened the scoring with his 15th goal of the season, the most among NHL rookies. Simmonds did the work in the corner and fed Read for a successful one-timer at the 9:30 mark of the second period.
Hartnell doubled the advantage at 13:04, redirecting Kimmo Timonen's point shot, but newcomer Alexei Ponikarovsky replied for the Devils 28 seconds later. Acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday, Ponikarovsky tipped a Matt Taormina slap shot inside the right post for his first goal since December 13.
Hartnell converted a feed from Claude Giroux in the left circle 8:07 into the third period to make it 3-1.
Simmonds lit the lamp with 2:22 to play.
