Dubnyk, Oilers stonewall Flyers
Feb 24, 2012 - 5:27 AM Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Devan Dubnyk stopped 35 shots for his first shutout of the season as Edmonton took a 2-0 win over Philadelphia at Rexall Place.Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle scored for the Oilers, who have won their past two.
"That's a very skilled team over there and I thought we did a good job of boxing them out," said Dubnyk. "The guys put in a couple of good goals in the second period and we were able to shut them down in the third."
Ilya Bryzgalov gave up both goals on 29 shots for the Flyers, who have lost four of their last six.
The Flyers had the better of chances in the first period, outshooting Edmonton, 14-9, but the Oilers came out charging in the second.
Just 3:26 in while skating on the power play, the team took a 1-0 lead as Ryan Whitney's shot from the high slot went wide of the net, but it bounced off the backboards to the stick of Hall, who one-timed it in from the low right side.
Edmonton made it a 2-0 game contest at the 8:04 mark of the middle frame as Eberle got a turnover at the left point and skated to the slot before sending a wrister on net that trickled past Bryzgalov.
Bryzgalov made the two-goal deficit stand up when he stopped Shawn Horcoff on a penalty shot with 2:54 to play, but Dubnyk stopped all 15 shots he faced in the third period to post his third career shutout.
"We just came out flat in the second period and they took it to us," said Philadelphia center Danny Briere. "We got a big effort from Bryzgalov and he gave us a chance to win until the end, we just couldn't get it going."
