Bruins hang on late, topple Senators

Feb 26, 2012 - 5:53 AM Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Patrice Bergeron tallied twice and added one assist, as Boston withstood a late Ottawa rally to claim a 5-3 victory at Scotiabank Place.

David Krejci, Brad Marchand and Carter Camper also scored for the Bruins, who completed a six-game road trip at 3-2-1 and moved five points ahead of Ottawa for top spot in the Northeast Division.

Tim Thomas made 27 saves for the win.

"We controlled the play," said Thomas. "We were strong on the puck and that was helpful."

Daniel Alfredsson scored a pair of late goals for the Senators, whose four- game win streak came to an end. Jason Spezza notched three assists and Erik Karlsson added a goal and two helpers in defeat.

Alex Auld allowed four goals on 37 shots in the loss.

"They're a good hockey club for a reason. We've played some better games against them but we can't find a way to beat them," Spezza said about Boston. "We definitely battled them hard."

Krejci was the beneficiary of a bounce off the end boards from an errant Dennis Seidenberg shot, and beat Auld to the near post from the left wing for a power-play goal and 4-1 game with 9:36 left in regulation.

But Spezza's long cross-ice feed found Alfredsson for a successful blast near the boards on the left wing to make it a two-goal contest with 3:45 to go.

Alfredsson then scored from the same spot on the ice off a Karlsson dish just 1:37 later for a 4-3 score.

Auld was sent off for an extra skater inside the final minute of play, but Bergeron hit the empty net from his own zone with 18.2 seconds remaining.

Karlsson ripped home a wrister from between the circles for a 1-0 Ottawa edge only 70 seconds in, but Bergeron's put-back of a Zdeno Chara blast tied the game at 3:46.

Marchand's long shot from below the left circle found space through Auld for a 2-1 Bruins edge with 3:47 remaining in the first and the visitors led at intermission.

Camper provided a two-goal margin at 3:57 of the second period, picking up his first NHL goal by converting an Adam McQuaid rebound at the left side.

Marchand's tally was his 22nd of the season, setting a new career high first attained last year...Karlsson's point streak was extended to six games, and his three-point performance tied him with Norm Maciver (63 in 1992-93) for most points in a single season by an Ottawa defenseman...Spezza reached the 600-point plateau with his primary assist on Alfredsson's first goal...Senators starting goaltender Craig Anderson is expected to miss an extended period of time after suffering a lacerated finger in an off-ice accident...Bruins forward Shawn Thornton was a late scratch due to flu-like symptoms.
