Brodeur outduels Giguere, Devils down Avs in SO

Mar 16, 2012 - 4:08 AM Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Ilya Kovalchuk scored the winner in the shootout as the New Jersey Devils took a 1-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

In the first round, Kovalchuk outlasted Jean-Sebastien Giguere to the right before burying his wrister.

Martin Brodeur then made a glove save on Milan Hejduk's wrister and Zach Parise made it a two-score margin when he froze Giguere with a backhander.

Brodeur then sealed the win as he made a pad save on Peter Meuller's attempt.

Broduer stopped 28 shots for just his second shutout of the season, but 118th of his career as the Devils won for the fifth time in their past six games.

"It's extra points and those are important right now," said Kovalchuk. "But if it wasn't me scoring it would have been someone else, everyone is playing really good right now."

Giguere was credited with his second shutout of the season as he stopped 33 shots through regulation and overtime for the Avalanche, who had a three-game winning streak stopped.

"This game could have gone either way, for sure," said Giguere. "I thought we played a good game, but they were just as good over there."

The Devils remain in the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference with 87 points while the Avalanche sit in the eighth spot in the Western Conference with 81 points.

After stopping just five shots to Brodeur's eight saves in the first period, Giguere was the busier of the two goaltenders over the remainder of the game as he stopped 28 shots while Brodeur made 20 saves.
