Macenauer, Hiller help Ducks blank Sharks
Oct 15, 2011 - 5:12 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Maxime Macenauer's first career goal wound up being the game-winner, as the Ducks edged the Sharks, 1-0, behind their rookie forward and Jonas Hiller's 12th career shutout.Hiller made 31 saves for Anaheim, which was playing its home opener after splitting two games in Europe last weekend.
"I felt comfortable tonight, but it was a great game by our whole team. It's nice to get these kind of games early in the season," Hiller said.
Thomas Greiss stopped 22-of-23 shots in defeat. San Jose had nearly a week off after beating Phoenix in its season opener.
The sequence leading up to Macenauer's goal at 13:59 of the opening period began in the Anaheim end at the left circle. The Ducks won the faceoff, and Brandon McMillan took a pass off the right boards and sent the puck into the corner. Macenauer was trailing the play and went uncovered as he crashed the net, sending George Parros' centering feed past Greiss.
The shot was one of just four in the period for Anaheim, which had nearly as many penalties in the opening 20 minutes (three).
Hiller and the Ducks' special teams held the Sharks scoreless on four chances with the man advantage.
"The chances were there, but overall I didn't think we were the better team. We weren't assertive tonight," Sharks forward Ryane Clowe said.
