Voynov scores twice as Kings top Stars

Oct 28, 2011 - 5:55 AM Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Slava Voynov scored twice and added an assist, helping the Los Angeles Kings top the Dallas Stars 5-3 from American Airlines Center.

Justin Williams and Scott Parse scored, Dustin Brown added an empty-netter and Mike Richards dished out three helpers for the Kings, who got 30 saves from Jonathan Quick in goal.

Trevor Daley, Michael Ryder and Eric Nystrom lit the lamp for Dallas.

Kari Lehtonen made 24 saves in defeat for the Stars, who lost for the first time this season on home ice.

With the game knotted at three, Los Angeles broke the tie at 13:08 of the final period when Voynov inched in from his right point position and let a slap shot go that got through the traffic in front and then through Lehtonen to give the Kings a 4-3 lead.

A tripping penalty to Brown with 2:55 to go in the game gave the Stars an excellent chance to tie the game late, but the power play was ineffective and Brown was able to fire it into the empty net with 27 seconds left in regulation.

The Stars took the early lead with a power-play tally at 14:01 of the opening stanza when Jamie Benn fired a shot from the right circle that was stopped by Quick, but Daley was parked in front of the net and popped home the rebound to give his team a 1-0 lead.

The Stars took the one-goal lead into the first intermission, but Los Angeles scored three unanswered goals in the second stanza to take a 3-1 lead.

Williams' picked up the first goal of the period at 3:47 complements of a nice pass Voynov.

The next tally came at the 11:27 mark when Brown fired a shot wide to the right of the net from the slot, but Parse was there to take the puck off the boards and backhand it past Lehtonen for a 2-1 lead.

Los Angeles finished off its dominant second period with a power-play goal at 15:21 of the period when Williams wristed a shot on goal from the left point that wound up on the stick of Brown in front, who then found Voynov sneaking in from his point position down to the right circle and the rookie defenseman fired it in behind Lehtonen.

"The second period, we came out real well. I really liked the way we showed some support for the puck here tonight," Kings head coach Terry Murray said. "That's the kind of play that we want to continue to build on."

Ryder tallied for Dallas at 3:03 of the final stanza to pull the Stars within one and Nystrom was able to bury one past Quick from the slot off a nice feed from Vernon Fiddler behind the net to tie the game at three.

"That's a good hockey team over there and just like us, they weren't going to give up," Nystrom said. "They got that next one, that was key and made it tough for us to get another one. It's good to battle back like that and give ourselves a chance, but obviously the end result wasn't what we wanted."
