Carter scores twice as Blue Jackets down Flames

Nov 22, 2011 - 4:39 AM
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Jeff Carter scored two goals, leading the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 4-1 win over the Calgary Flames at Nationwide Arena.

Antoine Vermette and Rick Nash scored, while Vinny Prospal added three assists for the Blue Jackets, who have won back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Curtis Sanford made 27 saves for Columbus.

Mark Giordano scored the only goal for the Flames, who got 26 saves from Henrik Karlsson in defeat.

Columbus opened the scoring at 3:01 of the first stanza when Carter picked up a loose puck in the defensive zone, raced up the left wing and snapped one high to the glove side of Karlsson from the slot.

The Blue Jackets extended their lead to 2-0 at 6:45 of the opening period when a shot from close in front was stopped by Karlsson, but Vermette was left unchecked and he slipped it into the open net.

Columbus made it 3-0 at 5:28 of the second period with a 5-on-3 power-play tally. James Wisniewski fired a shot from the high slot that was stopped by Karlsson and fell to Prospal in front, who fed a wide-open Carter to the left of the net and the big center fired it into the net.

"It was another good effort, as close to a 60-minute effort as you can get," Carter said. "I'm pleased about that and we kept it rolling, but we have another good test in a couple days against New Jersey."

The Flames got on the board at 9:07 of the second period on the power play when Giordano got a pass from Alex Tanguay, walked to the right circle and fired it past Sanford high to the stick side from the right circle to cut the deficit to two.

Nash added an empty-netter with 1:31 to play in the final period to secure the win for Columbus.

"We certainly didn't have a lot of drive," Flames head coach Brent Sutter said. "We started the game with not much emotion. They got a goal on us early and we never seemed to get it."
