Wild edge Oilers in shootout

Dec 1, 2011 - 7:01 AM Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Kyle Brodziak scored in the sixth round of the shootout to lift the Minnesota Wild over the Edmonton Oilers, 3-2.

Brodziak and Devin Setoguchi scored in the second period for the Wild, who have won two in a row since a two-game skid. Niklas Backstrom made 28 saves.

Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each had a goal and an assist for the Oilers, who have dropped three straight games. Nikolai Khabibulin turned aside 27-of-29 shots.

Each team scored three times over the first five rounds of the shootout. Edmonton's Ryan Smyth failed to beat Backstrom with a backhander, leaving the door open for Minnesota. Brodziak put the game away with a wrister.

"I try to make it look like I'm going to my back hand then try to pull it quickly to my forehand as quickly as I can and then go five hole," Brodziak said. "I don't even know what to say, I'm so glad it went in, I'm pretty giddy right now but I'm just happy we got the two points and pretty proud of the group right now."

The Oilers got on the board at the 9:58 mark of the first period. Nugent- Hopkins received a nice feed from Andy Sutton and buried a one-timer.

Eberle made it a 2-0 game with a power-play goal at the 5:10 mark of the middle stanza. Nugent-Hopkins slid a cross-ice pass from the right circle to Eberle, whose backhander beat Backstrom.

Setoguchi got the Wild on the board at the 11:31 mark. Mikko Koivu threw the puck towards the net from the half-wall and Setoguchi was there for the tip- in.

Minnesota then tied the game on the power play with 5:09 remaining. Brodziak's initial shot from the right point was blocked, but the puck came back to him. Khabibulin put his stick out and got a piece of the disc, which bounced off Brodziak's arm and through Khabibulin's legs.

Backstrom made 12 saves in a scoreless third stanza, while Khabibulin stopped nine shots.

Smyth was sent to the penalty box for tripping 3:07 into overtime. The Wild failed to take advantage.

"We did some good things especially in the first and then we just had a short amount of time in the second where we let our foot off the gas and they were able to capitalize," Edmonton's Sam Gagner said. "It's just the little things we just weren't hard on pucks and turned pucks over and they were able to get some life and ultimately it cost us the game."

Game Notes

Edmonton snapped an eight-game losing streak in this series on November 25. Minnesota has won five straight at Edmonton...Oilers forward Taylor Hall will miss 2-to-4 weeks of action with a left shoulder injury. The Oilers were also without forwards Ben Eager (back) and Anton Lander (hand) on Wednesday...The Wild set a franchise record for wins in a month with 11 in November.
