Ducks open up big lead, hang on late to down Avs
Jan 23, 2012 - 4:29 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Bobby Ryan had two goals and Jonas Hiller made 43 saves, as the surging Anaheim Ducks held off the Colorado Avalanche, 3-2.Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and an assist for the Ducks, who have won five in a row for the first time since a six-game streak from November 3-12 of last season.
"I'm happy about the win, even though it wasn't our best game and it wasn't pretty," Hiller said. "We found a way. We'll take those two points. Everybody knows we can play better and have to if we want to win on Tuesday."
Ryan O'Reilly and Milan Hejduk lit the lamp for the Avalanche, who had a two- game winning streak snapped. Jean-Sebastien Giguere made just 15 saves in defeat.
Ryan put the Ducks ahead 1-0 on a short-handed goal at the 2:49 mark of the first period. Ryan stole the puck at center ice and went in on a breakaway, beating Giguere with a wrister.
Hiller made 15 saves in the first and 13 in the second.
The Ducks scored on the power play just 20 seconds into the third. Teemu Selanne made his way around the net, and instead of trying a wraparound, slid a pass to Getzlaf for an easy tip-in.
Ryan scored on another breakaway at the 3:56 mark to give Anaheim a 3-0 lead.
Colorado scored two late goals to make things interesting. First, O'Reilly capitalized off a turnover in front of Hiller with 5:09 remaining.
Hejduk put home a rebound on the power play with 3:32 left to make it a 3-2 contest.
Hiller made 15 saves in the final period to secure the victory.
"I feel that it's a game we should have at least had a point," Giguere said. "I think on the road, outshooting the other team like that, I thought we were the better team for the most part."
