Gagner lifts Oilers over Sharks in SO

Mar 7, 2012 - 7:33 AM San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Sam Gagner scored in the second round of the shootout, as the Edmonton Oilers snuck past the San Jose Sharks, 3-2.

Jordan Eberle and Ryan Smyth scored in regulation for the Oilers, who snapped a three-game skid. Devan Dubnyk made 28 saves.

"We got the two points and that's what we needed," Eberle said.

Jim Vandermeer and Ryane Clowe lit the lamp for the Sharks, who went 1-2-1 on a four-game homestand.

Antti Niemi stopped 24-of-26 shots for San Jose, which sits three points behind Dallas for first in the Pacific Division.

Sharks head coach Todd McLellan returned to the bench after missing three games with concussion-like symptoms suffered when he was accidentally hit on the head by a stick versus Minnesota on February 26.

"We played well enough to get a point and just poor enough to lose one," McLellan said.

The Oilers found the back of the net just 10 seconds into the game. After Edmonton dumped the puck into the San Jose zone, Dan Boyle misplayed the bouncing disc in front of his own net. A streaking Eberle came charging in and batted the puck past Niemi.

But Vandermeer tied the game with his first goal of the season at the 3:17 mark. His shot from the high slot beat Dubnyk.

San Jose took the lead at the 15:19 mark of the middle stanza. Dubnyk failed to fully control the puck along the side of the net, and Logan Couture made sure he didn't cover up the disc. The puck ended up on the stick of Clowe, who found the back of the net.

Less than a minute later, Smyth deflected Jeff Petry's one-timer past Niemi.

The Sharks failed to score on a brief 5-on-3 power play in the third period.

Dubnyk stopped shots from Joe Pavelski, Michal Handzus and Brent Burns in the shootout.

Game Notes

The Oilers have taken two of three from the Sharks this season...San Jose starts a four-game road trip in Dallas on Thursday.
