Kings pull out SO win over Blues

Mar 23, 2012 - 5:52 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Jeff Carter recorded the game-winning goal in the fourth round of the shootout to lift the Los Angeles Kings over the St. Louis Blues, 1-0, at Staples Center.

After Mike Richards and T.J. Oshie both recorded goals in the second round, Dustin Brown and Jaden Schwartz were each denied in the third.

Carter then raced down the center of the ice and made a quick fake in the slot before slipping a shot in between the legs of Brian Elliot. Chris Stewart had a chance to keep the Blues alive, but his backhander hit the outside of the left post to seal the Kings' sixth straight win.

Jonathan Quick stopped all 35 shots he faced to earn his eighth shutout of the season. With the victory, Los Angeles jumped up to third place in the Western Conference, surpassing the Phoenix Coyotes for the top spot in the Pacific Division.

"That was a lot of fun," Quick said. "When no goals are scored it makes for an exciting game."

Elliot made 37 saves for his seventh shutout of the year, but the Blues still dropped their fourth game in five tries.

Each team was awarded a power play in the first and second periods, but neither was able to convert as both goaltenders shut the door.

Then, in the extra frame, Kings forward Justin Williams was whistled for a tripping penalty with 1:53 remaining, giving the Blues a 4-on-3 advantage for the remainder of OT.

But Quick stopped all three shots sent his way to forced the shootout. Elliot made two stops in overtime.

"It's tough not getting a goal but we did get a point. We played a good team game tonight and [Quick] made some big saves at the other end," said Elliot.

Game Notes

Elliot and teammate Jaroslav Halak have combined for a team-record tying 13 shutouts on the season...The Kings' win streak is their longest since winning six straight from October 28-November 13 of last season.
