Ryder, Lehtonen lead Stars over Red Wings
Jan 23, 2013 - 5:58 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Michael Ryder scored his first two goals of the season to help the Dallas Stars spoil Detroit's home opener with a 2-1 victory over the Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.Kari Lehtonen came close to recording a shutout, finishing with 39 saves for Dallas.
"Detroit is not an easy team to play at home and I think we did a good job. We wanted to get off to a good start and we did that," said Ryder.
Rookie Damien Brunner lit the lamp with 3.4 seconds remaining in the third period for the Red Wings, converting a feed from Pavel Datsyuk. Jimmy Howard played well in defeat, stopping 30 shots.
One area that continues to be troublesome for Detroit is the power play. The Red Wings were 0-for-4 on the power play and nearly surrendered a short-handed goal. Howard, though, made a nifty save on Trevor Daley on an odd-man rush in the second period.
Detroit has yet to score on 15 power plays through its first three games.
"It's still early, but it is also a short season and we have to win games. We can't win one and lose two," Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg.
The Red Wings outshot the Stars 13-9 in the first period, but trailed 1-0 on a goal by Ryder.
Ryder, who led Dallas with a career-best 35 tallies last season, found the top left corner of the net with a wrister from the right circle 5:41 into the contest.
The Stars got two power plays before five minutes had elapsed in the second period. Valtteri Filppula nearly tied the game, hitting the post while the Red Wings killed off the tripping minors assessed to Brunner and Kyle Quincey.
Ryder netted his 199th career goal off a Ray Whitney pass at the 5:34 mark of the third period.
