Jagr's SO goal lifts Stars over Coyotes
Feb 2, 2013 - 6:06 AM Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Jaromir Jagr scored in the fourth round of the shootout to lift the Dallas Stars over the Phoenix Coyotes, 4-3, in the opener of a home-and-home series.Brenden Dillon had a goal and an assist for the Stars, who snapped a four-game skid. Antoine Roussel and Michael Ryder also scored.
Kari Lehtonen made 31 saves for Dallas, which posted a 4-3 home win over the Coyotes to open the season on Jan. 19.
"We still have areas we have to clean up in our game, the turnovers and we need to play the game the right way," Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said. "I think that's important for us moving forward, there is still some clean up that has to happen here regardless if we got two points."
Martin Hanzal had two goals for Phoenix, which fell to 2-4-2 on the season. Radim Vrbata added a goal and an assist.
Mike Smith stopped 21-of-24 shots for the Coyotes, who played Friday's game just hours after the franchise's latest prospective buyer fell through. Greg Jamison, who had a provisional deal in place to purchase the Coyotes, missed Thursday's midnight deadline to officially buy the club from the NHL.
Roussel, making his NHL debut, made it 1-0 Dallas at the 9:53 mark of the first period. The 23-year-old skated in on a breakaway and put a backhander past Smith.
Dillon's slapper from the left point at the 12:03 mark gave the Stars a 2-0 lead.
The Coyotes got on the board with six minutes remaining in the opening frame. Oliver Ekman-Larsson's shot from the left point was deflected in by Vrbata.
Phoenix tied the game just 45 seconds into the middle stanza. Ekman-Larsson's shot from the right point was blocked and the puck ended up on the stick of Hanzal, whose backhander beat Lehtonen.
At the 14:14 mark, Ryder's shot from the top of the left circle put Dallas back in front.
The back-and-forth battle continued as Hanzal's shot from the slot tied the game at three with 1:34 to go.
Lehtonen combined to make 14 saves in the third period and overtime. Smith stopped 10 shots over that span.
Vrbata started the second round of the shootout with a goal. Smith then stopped Ray Whitney to keep Phoenix ahead. It came down to Jamie Benn, who beat Smith to keep the Stars alive.
Lehtonen stopped Ekman-Larsson's shot to start the fourth round. Jagr then beat Smith with a wrister to give Dallas the victory.
"I thought our team hung around the game, competed really hard and gave ourselves a chance to win, but in the end gave a point up," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said.
