Avalanche beat Oilers thanks to 2nd-period scores
Feb 2, 2013 - 11:42 PM Denver, CO (Sports Network) - P.A. Parenteau and Jamie McGinn tallied in the second period to help Colorado overcome an early deficit and beat Edmonton, 3-1, at Pepsi Center.Paul Stastny added a late score and Matt Duchene posted two assists for the Avalanche, who have won two in a row since losing three straight.
Semyon Varlamov stopped 25 shots for Colorado, which avenged a 4-1 loss to their foes in Edmonton on Monday and emerged victorious in its first outing without the services of Gabriel Landeskog -- who was placed on injured reserve Friday.
"We knew we had to come out big tonight, and I'm glad we got a couple after that bad start," said McGinn.
Nail Yakupov's first-period marker was all for the Oilers, losers in three of their last five. Devan Dubnyk played well in defeat, making 37 saves.
Parenteau's deflection of a Ryan Wilson floater from the point evened the game with 7:53 remaining in the second period, then McGinn's strike roughly 2 1/2 minutes later put the hosts on top to stay.
"It was a great play by Erik (Johnson), even though he didn't get an assist, he made a great play in the D-zone. I managed to get the puck on the boards, then I saw Jamie wide open," Duchene said of the sequence that led to the game winner.
Edmonton was awarded a power play with 3:20 remaining when Stastny was sent off for a rare face-off violation, but Colorado managed to kill it off then pick up an insurance goal in the final minutes with an empty-net score from Stastny.
The Oilers struck less than a minute after the opening faceoff when Yakupov swept home a rebound from the left side.
"It's tough to lose to a division rival. We came out strong, but after that, they took it to us," noted Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. "We were turning the puck over too much. We let our guard down for 5 minutes and that's all it takes."
