Bonino records first hat trick as Ducks down Kings
Feb 3, 2013 - 7:30 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Nick Bonino registered his first career hat trick and an assist to lead the Anaheim Ducks to a 7-4 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Honda Center.Bonino beat Los Angeles netminder Jonathan Quick twice in the first 5:49 of the game and potted one of the Ducks' three power-play markers at the 8:39 mark of the third period.
Anaheim also got man-advantage tallies from Sheldon Souray and Kyle Palmieri. Bobby Ryan, Luca Sbisa and rookie Emerson Etem each collected two assists for the Ducks, who improved to 5-1-1 on the season.
Dustin Brown scored two power-play goals for the Kings, who had totaled just 11 goals in their first six games.
Los Angeles pulled even at 4-4 at 14:12 of the second period on a Justin Williams backhander that rolled up the blocker and over the shoulder of Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller, who tried to seal off the right post.
The Ducks retook the lead 2:02 later on the power play. They executed a quick passing sequence that led to Palmieri scoring on a one-timer from between the circles.
Bonino made it 6-4 with the Kings' Anze Kopitar in the penalty box.
"It feels good. I can't really describe it," Bonino said. "I haven't scored a ton of goals in my career so far, so it feels real good to get three here." He had scored only six goals in 91 career NHL games.
Teemu Selanne added an empty-netter with 2:06 to play.
Quick's outing proved to be a cameo appearance after he made only one save.
Bonino pulled the puck around Kings defenseman Jake Muzzin and scored a backhander from his knees 2:30 into the game. His forechecking in the offensive zone led to a second goal. He stripped the puck from LA blueliner Drew Doughty in the corner and scored on a wraparound.
Jonathan Bernier then made his season debut between the pipes, replacing Quick after Bonino's second tally.
The goalie swap seemed to invigorate the Kings as they erased the 2-0 deficit with goals 34 seconds apart.
LA got on the board via its slumbering power play as Brown fired in a cross- ice pass from Kopitar. The unit entered play ranked 30th and 0-for-18 on the road.
Moments later, the Kings worked the puck low-to-high and Jarret Stoll, playing in his 600th NHL game, beat Hiller from atop the right circle at 9:49.
Anaheim went back in front when Corey Perry delivered a no-look pass that Ryan Getzlaf converted at 13:30 of the first period.
Brown netted the equalizer 1:15 into the middle stanza, providing the screen and cleaning up the rebound of Doughty's shot.
Souray put the Ducks up 4-3 with a slap shot that squeaked through Bernier at 9:35.
"We came back multiple times and in turn we didn't kill a penalty," Williams said. "They came back and scored power-play goals on us and that's extremely deflating."
Game Notes
Anaheim defenseman Cam Fowler left the game with an upper-body injury ... Hiller mad 30 saves ... The Kings won five of the six meetings last season ... Doughty and Simon Gagne both had two helpers for Los Angeles ... Bernier stopped 17 shots.
