Schroeder scores twice, Canucks roll over Flames

Feb 10, 2013 - 7:52 AM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Jordan Schroeder scored his first two NHL goals and the Vancouver Canucks stayed hot with a 5-1 victory over the Calgary Flames.

Alexandre Burrows and Kevin Bieksa each had a goal and an assist for the Canucks, who have won five straight to improve to 7-2-2 on the season. Chris Higgins also lit the lamp.

Cory Schneider stopped 33-of-34 shots in the victory.

Lee Stempniak scored the lone goal for the Flames, who had won two in a row. Leland Irving turned aside 26-of-31 shots.

It was all downhill for the Flames after they scored their only goal of the game late in the first period. Matt Stajan's one-timer from the left circle set up a rebound in front for Stempniak, who lit the lamp with 1:42 left.

The Canucks took control of the contest with three goals in the middle stanza. Burrows chipped in a loose puck that was sitting under Irving, making it 1-1 at the 8:34 mark.

Vancouver went on the power play just seconds later when Roman Cervenka was called for hooking. A short time into the man advantage, Schroeder tipped in Alexander Edler's shot from the right point.

"Excitement. Relief. It's been eight games and it kind of feels like a weight lifted off your shoulders. You want to get that first one so bad," Schroeder said of his first NHL goal.

Bieksa's slap shot from the point made it a 3-1 game with 2:23 left.

Higgins and Schroeder scored in the third to account for the final margin.

"Leland Irving kept us in the game. Without him, it would have been much worse than this," Flames coach Bob Hartley said. "We played a great first period and then second and third period the bottom line is they outworked us, they wanted it way more than us."
