Blackhawks extend streak in OT win over Oilers

Feb 26, 2013 - 5:57 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - The streak continues for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Marian Hossa scored 1:44 into overtime to lift the Blackhawks over the Edmonton Oilers, 3-2, on Monday.

Viktor Stalberg and Patrick Kane also scored for Chicago, which is riding an NHL-record streak of 19 straight games to open the season with a point (16-0-3), surpassing the previous record of 16 held by the 2006-07 Anaheim Ducks.

Ray Emery made 17 saves for the Blackhawks, who have won six in a row. Chicago also improved to 8-0-1 at home this season.

Jeff Petry and Nail Yakupov scored for the Oilers, who started a nine-game road trip on Monday. Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 31-of-34 shots in defeat.

"Big picture, it's an excellent point against the strongest team in the National Hockey League right now," Oilers coach Ralph Krueger said. "Of course you feel pain, having the lead going into the third period. It's definitely something you dream and believe you can close it, but they really are an amazingly powerful team. They're very, very strong on the puck. They never let up at all."

Petry's shorthanded goal just 4:28 into the game gave the Oilers an early lead. After Chicago's Duncan Keith fell near center ice with the puck, Lennart Petrell gathered the disc for Edmonton and broke in against Emery. Emery was out of position following a fantastic save, and Petry put home the easy rebound.

It didn't take long for the Blackhawks to respond. Just 1:02 after Petry's goal, Kane picked up the puck in between the hash marks and backhanded it past Khabibulin.

Edmonton went back in front at the 14:17 mark of the middle stanza. Sam Gagner made a nice pass across the slot to Yakupov, whose one-timer from the right circle beat Emery.

"The biggest thing is that we don't want to lose right now," Kane said. "We want to keep this thing going. I'm telling you, after the second period guys weren't very happy that we were down a goal and we knew we wanted to come back and change that right away."

Stalberg tied it up 2-2 just 2:24 into the third period. Michal Rozsival threw the puck toward the crease for Stalberg, who poked at the puck in the crease and it slipped under Khabibulin's pad. After a video review, it was ruled a goal.

In overtime, Hossa knocked in his own rebound to send the Blackhawks to another victory.

Game Notes

Edmonton had won three straight against Chicago ... The Oilers were without forward Taylor Hall, who served the second of a two-game suspension on Monday for an illegal hit on the Wild's Cal Clutterbuck in last Thursday's 3-1 loss ... Chicago center Dave Bolland missed his second straight game with an upper- body injury ... The Blackhawks went 1-for-2 on the power play, while the Oilers went 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
