Sharks top Canucks in SO

Mar 6, 2013 - 7:45 AM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Joe Pavelski scored in the fourth round of the shootout to lift the San Jose Sharks over the Vancouver Canucks, 3-2, on Tuesday.

Scott Gomez and Adam Burish scored in regulation for the Sharks, who have won three of four. Antti Niemi made 36 saves.

Henrik Sedin and Jannik Hansen lit the lamp for the Canucks, who have dropped four of five. Cory Schneider stopped 28-of-30 shots.

"We've got to start scoring goals and that's the bottom line," Sedin said.

Gomez scored his first goal as a Shark at the 7:42 mark of the first period. Gomez's slap shot from the high slot got past Schneider.

San Jose made it a 2-0 game on Burish's shorthanded goal at the 4:43 mark of the middle stanza.

Sedin's backhander from in close made it a one-goal game at the 13:23 mark.

Hansen scored with 25 seconds left in the period to tie it. Mason Raymond dropped a pass for Hansen inside the top of the left circle, and his shot beat Niemi.

"Giving up a goal late in the second, having to go on the penalty kill right away was a hurdle we had to overcome and we got our energy after that, we started to play better after that," Sharks head coach Todd McLellan said.

Following a scoreless third period, the Canucks had a golden chance to win the game in overtime. Gomez was sent to the penalty box for interference 1:34 into the extra session. Niemi held strong in net and kept it a tie game.

Vancouver's Chris Higgins scored in the first round of the shootout, but Logan Couture evened things in the third round. Pavelski, the final shooter in the fourth round, beat Schneider with a wrist shot.
