Bobrovsky, Blue Jackets down Coyotes in SO
Mar 17, 2013 - 5:50 AM Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Sergei Bobrovsky recorded 39 saves, and the Columbus Blue Jackets extended their longest points streak in franchise history with a 1-0 shootout win over the Phoenix Coyotes.Bobrovsky, who recorded his second shutout of his career, both this season, helped the Blue Jackets record a point in their 10th straight game (6-0-4).
Artem Anisimov and Mark Letestu scored in Columbus' fourth straight game that ended in shootout fashion.
"We needed to be better in some areas," Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards said. "You could tell our tanks were on empty."
Mike Smith stopped 23 shots for the Coyotes, who have been blanked in their last two contests. Phoenix lost 3-0 at St. Louis on Thursday.
"Our effort through the 65 minutes was very strong," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "We just need to get a little luck around the net."
Bobrovsky denied Rob Klinkhammer on a breakaway midway through the second period. It was part of 16 stops he made in the stanza.
The Blue Jackets outshot the Coyotes, 9-3, in the third period, and the two sides combined for only three shots in overtime. Bobrovsky made a glove save on a left circle blast from Martin Hanzal 1:40 into the extra session.
In the shootout, Anisimov was up first and he scored on a backhand. Bobrovsky then stopped Mikkel Boedker on a shot that clipped off the glove. Letestu skated through the right circle before moving to the front when he fired high into the net. Bobrovsky stuffed Steve Sullivan's attempt from in close to seal the outcome.
Game Notes
The Coyotes had won three straight versus the Blue Jackets, including the first two of the three meetings this season ... Phoenix has lost four straight at Columbus ... Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who played a day after inking a six-year contract extension, was penalized for holding the stick in the second period ... Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play ... Columbus defenseman John Moore, who missed the previous eight games due to a shoulder injury, returned to the lineup ... Smith has 23 career shutouts.
