Blackhawks take down Avs
Mar 19, 2013 - 4:08 AM Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Patrick Kane and Jonathan Towes both scored once and tallied two assists to help the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Monday.Brent Seabrook, Jimmy Hayes and Andrew Shaw also lit the lamp for the Blackhawks, winners in three straight. Ray Emery had 17 saves in the win.
"Keeping control of the puck is a big part of our game," Kane said. "We can score goals, that has never been a problem for us. We've been working on limiting how many goals we give up and controlling the puck."
Milan Hedjuk and Gabriel Landeskog scored one goal apiece for the Avalanche, losers in four straight. Semyon Varlamov had 27 saves in the setback.
"Tonight was a good display of a team with confidence playing a team with little to no confidence," Hedjuk said. "This was a different team than when we played them before and broke the streak. We got outplayed, plain and simple."
The Avalanche snapped the Blackhawks' 24-game streak with one point on March 8, but it was a much more lopsided affair this time around.
Chicago scored two goals just 57 seconds apart early in the first period. Hayes lit the lamp first with a backhand just 3:47 into the game. Kane took the puck from the right corner and centered it to Hayes, who spun around and pushed it through for his first goal of the season.
Shaw's wrister on a 2-on-1 rush made it 2-0 moments later.
Landeskog got the Avs on the board with a power play goal with 44 seconds remaining in the first. Matt Duchene passed the puck up ice to Landeskog, who split a pair of defenders before firing a wrister past Emery.
Kane beat Varlamov with a wrister at the 7:49 mark of the second to give the Blackhawks a 3-1 edge. Seabrook's slap shot nearly seven minutes later gave Chicago a 4-1 lead.
Hedjuk beat Emery with a wrister with just under 1 1/2 minutes left in the second period to make it 4-2.
Towes wrister with 3:30 left accounted for the final margin.
Game Notes
Chicago right winger Marian Hossa left in the first period with an upper body injury. He is considered day-to-day ... Chicago has 13 goal in its last two games ... Kane has four goals and six assists over his last four games ... Colorado has dropped three games at home on its current losing streak. The Avalanche lost just two games at Pepsi Center all season prior to the current skid.
